What it means
The story
Jacob was boiling a pot of red lentil stew when his brother Esau came in from the field, starving. Esau traded his birthright, his whole inheritance as the firstborn son, for one bowl. He ate, got up, and walked out.
The point
Never trade something forever for something right now.
If they ask
“Esau came home hungry and sold his whole inheritance to his brother for one bowl of stew. He ate it, got up, and left. Hungry is temporary, but what you trade for it isn’t.”

What it means
The story
God fed Israel bread from heaven every morning in the desert. They got sick of it and cried for the fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic they used to eat in Egypt. That was the menu from their own slavery.
The point
Miss the old life long enough and you’ll forget it was slavery.
If they ask
“It’s the grocery list Israel cried over in the desert. God was feeding them bread from heaven every day, and they missed the garlic they ate as slaves. They remembered the onions and forgot the slavery.”
Now you’ve been Manna’d.

What it means
The story
Job lost his children, his wealth and his health almost overnight. When his friends came, he told them the truth: life had gone so flat that nothing tasted like anything anymore, not even an egg. He didn’t fake being fine, and God never let go of him. In the end God restored Job, and his story has carried grieving people for thousands of years.
The point
Grief can take the taste out of everything, but it can’t take away God’s purpose for you.
If they ask
“Job lost everything, and he said life had gotten so bland even an egg had no taste. He didn’t pretend he was fine. God still wasn’t done with him, and He’s not done with you either.”
Now you’ve been Manna’d.

What it means
The story
Gideon had only 300 men against an army too big to count, and he was scared. God sent him to sneak into the enemy camp at night, where he overheard a soldier’s dream: a loaf of cheap barley bread rolled into camp and knocked a tent flat. The soldier’s friend said that loaf was Gideon, and God was giving him the win.
The point
God loves to use the small and overlooked, so everyone knows the win came from Him.
If they ask
“Gideon’s enemies dreamed he was a loaf of cheap bread that rolled into their camp and flattened it. That night, his 300 men beat an army. You don’t have to be impressive. God uses the small so everyone knows it was Him.”

What it means
The story
The Philistines banned blacksmiths in Israel so nobody could make a sword, and Israel had to pay the enemy to sharpen its farm tools. When war came, only Saul and his son Jonathan had swords. Then Jonathan climbed a cliff with one helper, said God can save “by many or by few,” and God routed the Philistines.
The point
God doesn’t need you well armed to win through you.
If they ask
“The enemy outlawed blacksmiths, so Israel went to war with two swords and a file for sharpening farm tools. God won the battle anyway. He has never been waiting on better equipment.”

What it means
The story
Paul preached so long that a young man named Eutychus fell asleep in a third story window, fell out, and died. Paul went down, wrapped his arms around him, and he came back to life. Then they went back upstairs, ate, and Paul kept preaching until sunrise.
The point
Even death can’t stop what God is doing.
If they ask
“A guy fell asleep in church, fell out a third story window, and died. Paul brought him back, and then finished the sermon. Whatever just interrupted your life is not the end of what God is doing.”

What it means
The story
Jesus was at a wedding when the wine ran out, a huge embarrassment for the family. He told the servants to fill six big stone jars with water, well over 100 gallons. When they served it, it was wine, and the best wine of the whole party. It was His first miracle.
The point
Jesus doesn’t just cover what you’re missing. He gives more than enough.
If they ask
“Jesus’ first miracle was at a wedding that ran out of wine. He filled six stone jars, well over 100 gallons, and it was the best wine served all night. He doesn’t patch what ran out. He replaces it with better.”

What it means
The story
Jesse sent his youngest son to the front lines with bread for his brothers and ten cheeses for their commander. David got up early, left his sheep with a keeper, and made the delivery. He walked up right as Goliath came out to mock Israel, and nobody else would fight him.
The point
Small jobs done faithfully are what put you in place for the big moments.
If they ask
“Before David killed Goliath, he was delivering cheese. That errand for his dad put him on the battlefield the day Goliath came out. Be faithful in the small things, and you’ll be ready for the big ones.”
Now you’ve been Manna’d.

What it means
The story
Job had lost everything. Here he looks back on his best days, when life was so rich it was like washing his steps in butter. But the first thing he says he misses isn’t the wealth. It’s God being close to him.
The point
The blessings were good, but God was the best part.
If they ask
“Job is remembering when life was so good it was like washing his steps in butter. What he missed most wasn’t the good life. It was being close to God. The blessings were good. God was better.”
Now you’ve been Manna’d.

What it means
The story
Jesus was calling out religious leaders who gave God ten percent of even the mint and spices in their kitchens but skipped justice, mercy and faithfulness. They strained their drinks through cloth so they wouldn’t swallow a gnat, an unclean bug. Jesus said they were swallowing the camel, which is also unclean, just bigger.
The point
If you’re careful about the tiny rules and careless about mercy, you’ve swallowed a camel.
If they ask
“Jesus said this to religious leaders who gave God ten percent of their spice racks and ignored mercy. They’d strain a bug out of their drink, then swallow a whole camel. You can be careful about everything except what matters.”
Now you’ve been Manna’d.

What it means
The story
David’s own son Absalom stole his throne, and David ran for his life into the wilderness with almost nothing. He and his people were hungry, tired and thirsty. Then three men showed up with beds, wheat, beans, honey, butter, sheep and cheese from their cows. One of them came from a nation David had once fought.
The point
When the people closest to you turn on you, God still provides, sometimes through people you’d never expect.
If they ask
“David’s own son stole his throne and ran him out into the desert. Right when he had nothing, food showed up, cheese included. When people turn on you, God still shows up.”
Now you’ve been Manna’d.
